This was the response to a letter and questionnaire mailed in October of 2007. -RB

"I enrolled at Rolla in June 1943, finished four semesters (two summers), then went in the Navy; back to Rolla, September 1946, and graduated Spring 1948. I joined Theta Kappa Phi Fraternity June '43. I had had some great Journalism training in high school (McBride High School, St. Louis) and was editor of the school paper there. At Rolla at that time the Theta Kaps almost dominated the editorial side of the Miner. My predecessor as editor was a Theta Kap. I'm not positive, but I believe it was Ed Goetteman. The Sigma Nu's dominated the business side of the Miner. [James B.] Chaney, a Sigma Nu, was my partner as Business Manager.

"I think we did a pretty good professional job so that the Miner issues were an important communications part of student campus life. We had a hard-working staff, impressive in size in a relatively small school. Relative to editorial content, there is a picture in the 1948 Rollamo high-lighting my interview with Miss America! Don't ask me how and why she got to Rolla. The most memorable content for me was in reporting the upcoming appearance in concert of a well known performer in those days, Jesus Maria Sanroma. I wrote the headline myself "Sanroma here on Tuesday" and we went to press. Unfortunately Sanroma appeared the day before, on a Monday. So many interested fans missed the concert. I can still remember very well the embarrassment, the flack!

"I can't really comment on significant contributions to the students and the school. Prof. Jelinek was our very effective advisor. We did our best to provide honest reporting, trying to publish both sides on controversial issues. For myself and all of the men on staff, it was an enjoyable diversion from the "nuts and bolts" curriculum students. I can't remember taking any requisite English classes on the way to an Engineering degree.
